Archaeologists find a pre-Inca ancestral cult site in Peru

A team of Peruvian and Japanese archaeologists has excavated a precolonial ancestral cult site in northern Peru. The Wari-period site in the Cajamarca region, about 900 kilometers north of Lima, dates to between AD 800 and 1,000, archaeologist Shinya Watanabe told AFP on Saturday.

Two burial chambers were found with pits for mummies and offerings for the ancestors. The discovery was made in the Jequetepeque Valley in the province of San Miguel in the Cajamarca region, which borders Ecuador. The Wari culture existed from the seventh to the thirteenth century in what is now Peru, but disappeared after being conquered by the expanding Inca Empire.

Watanabe spoke of “a great find” in the search for clues to the Wari culture. Judith Padilla of the Cultural Office of the Cajamarca Region said the find allows a better understanding of the “lifestyle and ritual practices” of the ancient societies that inhabited the region. (sda/afp)
