Record melt for Italy’s largest glacier, Adamello

The Adamello Glacier, Italy’s largest glacier in Trentino, has lost 50 hectares in area since 2015. This corresponds to the size of 70 football fields.

According to environmental association Legambiente, the Mandrone Glacier, part of the Adamello Glacier Complex, has reportedly retreated 330 meters in the last 12 years, including 139 meters in 2022 alone.

The area of the Marmolada Glacier continues to shrink. According to information from glaciologists at the University of Padua, the size of the Dolomite Glacier has halved since the year 2000. In 2022, the glacier shrank by 112 hectares.

The Alpine glaciers are shrinking more and more. More than 200 of these have disappeared since the late 19th century, giving way to rubble and rock. A consequence of global warming, according to the latest information from the environmental protection organization Legambiente.
