After the severe storm in La-Chaux-de-Fonds, it is still unclear how to classify this meteorologically. It was most likely a severe thunderstorm. However, experts initially did not rule out a tornado.
Patrick Stierli of the Federal Bureau of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss states to Watson that there was an extreme wind event associated with a so-called supercell storm. “However, the measured hurricane force of 217 km/h has yet to be verified internally. It will take a few days.” If the number were confirmed, it would be the strongest thunderstorm to date in Switzerland. The record is currently held by Glarus, which recorded a wind gust of 190 km/h on July 15, 1985.
Whether it was a tornado or a downburst cannot currently be clarified with certainty based on the available measurements and observations, according to Stierli. MeteoSwiss is currently leaning towards a downburst. A downburst is a violent thunderstorm.
“Tornadoes are rare in Switzerland,” says Stierli. However, the Jura is one of the tornado hotspots in Switzerland.
