There’s a 130-hp hybrid for a facelift: Toyota lifts the Yaris

New technology, familiar look: At the beginning of 2024, Toyota is sending its Yaris small car into the second half of its life with an overhaul.

There is always a makeover halfway through its lifecycle: A model that has been sold for several years is called a revision so that it is updated again in subsequent years. Most automakers take this term literally. Instead of real changes, only optical touches were made on the front grille, headlights or taillights.

Toyota is doing the opposite with its small car, the Yaris. It was named European Car of the Year in early 2021 and will be refurbished in early 2024. But the look remains the same – but there are huge technical innovations.

More power and torque

First: In addition to the previous 116 hp (85 kW) hybrid drive, a new 130 hp (97 kW) hybrid with 35 percent more torque will be available as an option. A larger electric motor and new engine electronics provide the extra power that comes standard on the two top configurations.

There are also new onboard electronics. In the future, it can even be updated with new software via mobile network while driving and comes with a complete assistance package that warns of dangerous situations and interferes with the brakes or steering. More sensitive radar sensors and cameras with a wider field of view help here.

A overtaking assistant is perfect for Switzerland’s 120km/h motorways – anyone trying to overtake a slower car in the right lane will slow down, which should save many driver’s licenses. The Yaris can now also be unlocked digitally – rights to it can be shared with up to four users for private ridesharing.

Navigation via the cloud

Alongside the digital instruments for all versions comes the new infotainment system, one of the areas where Toyota has almost traditionally fallen behind. The system is now more responsive, intuitive to operate, and navigates via cloud data based on real-time traffic conditions.

And visually? Nothing but a few new colors and fabrics for the interior. Prices are not fixed yet. The revamped Yaris won’t be delivered until early 2024.
