Round one fight! Street Fighter 6 is here!

After “Street Fighter 5” didn’t really spark with many fans, Capcom learned from its mistakes and with the sixth part offers a well-rounded fighting package to make nostalgics and newcomers happy at the same time.

Many of us may have first encountered the famous video game brand in the early 90’s. When “Street Fighter 2” came out for the Super Nintendo, we were all completely fascinated. The arcade implementation gave us countless hours of fun alone or in pairs in front of the screen and was the first step into the fighting game arena for many. Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, Blanka and whatever they were called became our companions in the youth room for a long time. The series received several sequels, special editions, updates and was implemented for almost every console.

Timeless, simple game principle

In “Street Fighter 6”, the basic principle of the game series has not changed. Still, a fighter is chosen to control the character for a certain amount of time and beat up the opponent until their energy meter is empty. When you have completed two laps, the game continues and the next competitor is waiting to be defeated. In addition, each character is given a little backstory, leading to a narrative conclusion at the end of the game.

Back then, this simple mode was enough to keep us busy. But the series has added more and more modes to the game over the years to ensure that the title will be consumed long after its release date. Of course, “Street Fighter 6” also has a big package. But before we get to the good stuff, the most important question needs to be answered: who’s included?

Legends and descendants

A total of 18 characters begin to have black eyes. The eight legendary characters from “Street Fighter 2”, whom we all took to our hearts at the time, are also included. Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, Dhalsim, Blanka, Zangief and Honda are reunited and show themselves in a fresh look, which fortunately is not too crazy and does not deny the roots of the World Warriors.

The well-known stages, ie the fighting arenas of the past, are back and immediately stimulate our nostalgia and joy with loving Easter eggs.

Other legends join the old guard: England’s Cammy is back, as is Jamaican DeeJay and sassy Korean Juri. Luke is also back, who functions excellently as the new figurehead of the series and with his sympathetic, cool image certainly already has a large fan base.

As befits a sequel, there are of course also new fighters who demand our attention: Manon is a ballerina, supermodel and judo professional in one and comes from France. The Italian Marisa is tall, strong and the opposite of the Mexican Lily, who can move quickly in the arena with her pettiness. The fourth lady in the group is Kimberly, a graffiti artist who is also very flexible and agile.

Hailing from Hong Kong, Jamie is Radiant Luke’s classic nemesis. Then there’s JP, an elderly gentleman who could somehow be related to the legendary villain M. Bison, as he has similar powers.

Many modes and always smooth

In addition to the classic arcade mode, where, just like before, the game is simply handed out without fuss, there are many other modes that ensure that you don’t give up the controller so quickly.

Although this “Street Fighter” game is still the most fun for two in front of the screen, there are of course various online battles, funny mini-games, challenges and other combat variants to measure yourself against opponents worldwide.

Whichever mode you choose, everything plays wonderfully smoothly and different controls can be selected too, making it easier to get started or relying entirely on nostalgia.

Defeating the city becomes a time waster

And then there’s a full adventure mode that throws us into a walkable city. But before we fight in Metro City, we can create our own hero of choice in an extensive character editor. And here you can really let off steam. Once you’re happy with your fighting creation, we’ll attend the training session, where we’ll be guided by Luke, the new “Street Fighter” figurehead.

Once we understand the basic mechanics, we hit the streets and the adventure begins. We meet familiar characters from the “Street Fighter” universe, learn new moves, fight with many residents and experience crazy dialogues and events. At the same time, we earn money with part-time jobs, level up, buy nice clothes and enjoy the many Capcom inside jokes that are spread in this world.

Even if Metro City can’t keep up with other competing cities in the video game landscape in terms of scope and level of detail, it creates a wonderful appeal. . Since then, Capcom has integrated another nice time waster.

Hanging out for hours with your loved ones

Conclusion: Thanks to the uncomplicated game mechanics, I enjoy “Street Fighter 6” just as much as “Street Fighter 2”. Even though the latest joke has a lot of modes and other bells and whistles that I don’t really need, the game tickles my nostalgia and keeps me hanging out with my favorites for hours on end.

The new fighters perfectly complement the old war horse series and bring a breath of fresh air to the battle arenas. In addition, all the characters are controlled as smoothly as butter and have a large number of movies that we will discover over many hours of play. Visually, as a nostalgic, it also melts your heart. Even though the characters have been given a fresh coat of paint, everything remains within reasonable limits and they don’t dare to experiment with animation technology.

Part 5 left me clueless and disappointing after a short while. The weak content publishing policy and complicated DLC business just made me shake my head. However, Capcom has learned from its mistakes and offers a worry-free all-round package for fighting game fans at the start of Part 6.

Whether you prefer an uncomplicated casual game, take on other people online or want to go into adventure mode with a specially created character, there is suitable content for everyone from the start.

“Street Fighter 6” will be available on June 2 for Playstation 5, Playstation 4 and Xbox Series X/S. Suitable from 12 years.
