According to the IBM boss, AI will kill so many office jobs

The computer group IBM wants to hire fewer people for some jobs because their work can be taken over by software based on artificial intelligence (AI).

He expects about one-third of human resources management jobs to be replaced by AI and automation within five years, IBM chief Arvind Krischna said. That is what the financial service Bloomberg says in an interview published on Monday.

This will suspend or delay hiring for such administrative work, Krishna said. IBM employs about 26,000 people who have no direct contact with customers.

According to the American group, part of the vacancies will not be filled. Software development and customer contact areas, on the other hand, remain discontinued. IBM has a total of about 260,000 employees.

ChatGPT is causing a stir

The text engine ChatGPT, Google’s competitor software Bard and programs that can generate images from text descriptions are currently causing a stir. For example, ChatGPT formulates texts by estimating word for word the likely continuation of a sentence.

A consequence of this programming is that the software not only makes up correct information, but also completely incorrect information – but the user sees no difference. Because of this, there are fears that their skills will be used, for example, to produce and spread misinformation. However, experts believe that this problem can be solved.

It is still unclear whether new jobs will compensate for the loss of old jobs in the future. In 2015, Markus Koch, head of consultancy Deloitte Switzerland, referred in the SRF program “Eco” to previous industrial revolutions with consequences for the labor market. Many jobs have shifted from agriculture to industry and the service sector. The difference is that this time the change is faster and will take place across all sectors.
