Battle between the smartphone giants: Apple is only just behind Samsung

Among other things, the iPhone manufacturer wants to overtake the market leader from South Korea with a sales offensive in India.

According to expert calculations, Apple was only slightly behind smartphone market leader Samsung in terms of market share in the past quarter.

Thanks to strong demand for the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple has achieved a market share of 21 percent, analysis company Canalys reports on Tuesday.

Samsung came up with 22 percent.

What’s special about it?

It’s an unusually high market share for Apple in the January-March quarter. In the Christmas business – Apple’s fiscal year starts in October – the American group has traditionally been the market leader because new iPhone models are fresh in stores. In the remaining three quarters – and also on an annual basis – South Korean rival Samsung is usually at the top.

All in all, the smartphone market shrank by twelve percent in the first quarter, according to calculations by Canalys. It was the fifth consecutive quarterly decline after strong business during the corona pandemic.

It’s unclear if the higher iPhone share this year could be related to pent-up demand for delivery issues in fall 2022. At the time, corona lockdowns at factories in China caused waiting times, especially with the more expensive and better-equipped iPhone 14 Pro.

In the first quarter of last year, Apple lagged far behind – with a market share of 18 percent, while Samsung had 24 percent. The iPhone is by far Apple’s most important product, accounting for more than half of the company’s total sales.

First Apple Store opened in India
Apple CEO Tim Cook opened the first Apple Store in India this week. Indian media reported on the opening in the financial metropolis of Mumbai.

With a population of about 1.4 billion and the fifth largest economy in the world, India is an interesting growth market for Silicon Valley companies. A second Apple Store will open in the capital New Delhi this week. The Indian market is very price conscious and dominated by Android devices. Relatively expensive iPhones have a small market share.

However, India also plays a role as a production location. In addition to China, Apple suppliers are increasingly turning to India as a location for iPhone production, according to the Indian government. Reportedly, supply chain diversification is also about geopolitical tensions.
