Jorge Campos (56) was one of the most colorful figures in world football in the 1990s. The Mexican goalkeeper, who was a striker early in his career, turned heads with his flashy, self-designed goalkeeper jerseys. But his main feature was his height of only 1.75 meters. With Yann Sommer’s 183 centimeters already considered too small by many, Campos would have had a very hard time.

The “Süddeutsche Zeitung” is now in talks with the Mexican about the discussion about the size of Sommer and the allegations after the Champions League game with Manchester City. And Campos has a clear opinion on that. “Focusing on body size is nonsense!”

Small goalkeepers bolder and more aggressive

According to Campos, the wrong person was blamed for the long-range goal of Manchester City’s Rodri in particular: “Did you look who didn’t go there? How Musiala doesn’t go well, how Kimmich turns away? Rodri should never have shot! But it’s just easier to talk about the goalkeeper’s height.”

The former Mexico international says positional play and reflexes are much more important than a keeper’s height. In addition, small keepers are more aggressive, braver and think more than their larger opponents. He is sure that little goalkeepers have a future in football. They are also often better on foot than great keepers.

Campos himself took part in the 1994, 1998 and 2002 World Cups and has a total of 130 caps for Mexico. His size was never his downfall: “If I’ve made a mistake, I’ve admitted and analyzed it, yes. But not based on whether I’m too short — or too young or too old.” (byl)
