This makes Brits uncomfortable with Swiss drivers

Great Britain is a diverse travel destination, from the bustling capital London (picture) to beaches in the south and hiking destinations in the north.

A trip to Great Britain in your own Swiss vehicle requires some preparation, not just because of the ferry connections or the Eurotunnel. Top 10 tips for a successful road trip in Great Britain without pissing off British drivers:

Always to the left: Left-hand traffic is even more confusing in a left-hand drive CH car than in a right-hand drive rental car in the UK. Especially when driving or turning on an empty road, you quickly turn to the wrong side. Hint: stick a reminder (“Drive left!”) in the cockpit (see picture), perhaps even under the windshield, with the mirror upside down (a kind of “head-on sticker”).

miles per hour instead of km/h: On the island, mph is used instead of km/h. In many cars, you can change a digital additional speedometer from km/h to mph or all-digital gauges – see operating instructions. If not, a “cheat sheet” (templates or stickers on the web) like the one in the image above is useful, but difficult to read at night.

Never annoying at night: The asymmetrical dipped beam blinds oncoming traffic when driving on the left. For older cars (eg halogen), mask the relevant part of the headlight (eg insulating tape or ready-made adhesive with aftermarket prism). For newer cars, change this from the onboard menu or have it done before heading to the garage – otherwise there will be a flasher from oncoming traffic!

The green card is: Since Brexit, the green insurance card can be claimed again. Order it from the insurer – today it’s white so it can be printed on a home computer.

wearing a vest: If you get out of the vehicle in the event of a breakdown or accident, you should definitely wear a reflective vest.

Glue or magnet: The CH country code is mandatory in Great Britain. If you do not want to stick a CH mark, a magnetic mark is usually recommended for five to seven francs. Important: The tailgate etc. test it with a magnet beforehand if it’s really made of metal.

Who rides first? Right-of-way rules are self-explanatory thanks to signals and signs. There is no right before left or left before right intersection. In the rare cases where there is an unregulated right-of-way, vehicle drivers need to communicate with each other.

roundabout: Priority is given to the right, enter from the left. When driving more than halfway around the roundabout, turn right first. Always turn left before exiting.

When things get tight: Single-lane highways with bypass partitions do not have clear priority rules, but priority should be given to uphill and heavy vehicles.

Caution with speed and alcohol: City/country/highway speed limit 30/60/70 mph (48/96/112 km/h), alcohol limit 0.8 (Scotland 0.5), emergency call 999 or 112.
