BMW will never be this sharp again

The new M2 is once again a typical BMW sports coupé: minimal dimensions, two-door, rear-wheel drive and bespoke interior.

Manual transmission is dying on BMW. Successive series are only available with an eight-speed automatic transmission or electric drive with a single-speed gearbox. But simplicity lovers have another reason to celebrate: BMW’s new M2 again comes with a manual transmission. Especially in America, it is considered a symbol that you control your car.

And now the bad news for purists: automatic transmissions are faster, more precise and more comfortable. Plus, it’s even more economical – the manual transmission uses half a liter more in the WLTP test cycle. With such a chubby looking sports coupé with 460 hp, that’s not the main reason for or against choosing the model.

Electric side windows only

The tiny BMW M2 has for years been considered the legitimate successor to the legendary first M3 from 1986. While today’s can be considered significantly larger and even family-friendly, the M2 remains a classic: minimal dimensions, two-door, rear-wheel drive. In addition, it has a bespoke interior, but with a long hood, so the inline six-cylinder with 460 hp (338 kW) has enough space. On the other hand, there is no hybrid, electric boost or traction battery under the body. Still, whatever. Because with the XL-SUV XM and the new M5, which will be released in 2024, plug-in hybrid cars are also taking their place in BMW’s sports versions. It’s very likely the last time the new M2 will hit the road as such a pure driving machine: the electric motors here only lift the side windows.

However, the 4.58-metre-long two-door car is set to the limit of tolerable stiffness. If you switch to sports driving modes using the flame-red buttons on the steering wheel, you’ll get even more power and speed before shifting. Steering feedback is superb, the overall tuning with 50:50 balanced weight distribution is much sportier than an everyday car. Those who drive long distances on the motorway will probably be more comfortable with the BMW M340i followed by all-wheel drive.

Unrivaled in its class

But when maneuvering in tight bends, uphill and off-road, the M2 effortlessly outpaces its compact-class rivals. The seats fit perfectly and the steering wheel responds terribly – but the almost 1.8-tonnes weight is quite generous. After all, two people can sit very comfortably and there is room for two more in the back if needed. If the cargo space of 390 liters is not enough, it is better to store bags or jackets here.

The M2 reaches 100 km/h in less than four seconds, which is probably only available at the regulars’ table and can reach an optional 285 km/h top speed. He completely misjudges the character of the car – the M2 is not about top speed, but about the interaction between the driver and the car. But this comes at a price: the M2 starts at at least 91,300 francs. This is also significantly more than the original M3 from 1986.
