Do you know the original?

At the end of March, in a matter of hours, two photographs that had a few things in common made the headlines: they showed famous international statesmen and were fake. One photo shows Russian President Vladimir Putin kneeling before his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. Just at the moment when Putin is in Beijing on an official visit. And former US President Donald Trump was arrested by the police almost simultaneously – he is pictured. so called. Because both photos were not real.

AI images and deep fakes

Both images were put together by an artificial intelligence. The technical term is: AI-generated images; where AI stands for “Artificial Intelligence”. A similar video has long existed in the video industry, where so-called “deepfakes” translate the images and voices of celebrities into other situations.

In fact, this artificial intelligence phenomenon is all about premium photo montages. People have always liked to separate pictures. Today the computer makes it much more complex and faster, immediately looking for suitable angles and color patterns and then taking action. For the above quiz, we tried the Shutterstock photo agency’s AI generator.

But how do you recognize such AI images?

Sometimes too good to be true

What, did Putin really bow to Xi? If you ask yourself this question, you are already on the trail of manipulation. AI images are sometimes mentally too perfect. Because: AI is still run by a human who enters the appropriate terms into a field and lets the computer render the image.

Sometimes too good to be true (Part 2)

Extravagant beauty often applies to the subject as well. Because AI knows from a lot of Internet images that people like it, it usually puts beautifully arranged clouds in the background. For example with the Matterhorn test in the picture. After all, you think it’s the Matterhorn, but… something is wrong. Emotion is not usually deceptive.

(Cutting) cutting is very important

AI often manifests itself in the background, not the main subject. Things are either in focus or out of focus, which should actually be the opposite. Estimated cause: Added an image that is not very suitable for the community. To the human eye, the photo looks somewhat “faded”.

Everything is too soft, too round, too perfect

Details are often lacking in AI images. The outlines of buildings, pictures and animals are clear. Almost open. But where are the details? On the quiz it’s great to see how much detail can be seen in the mountains around the Landwasser Viaduct. While other images are surprisingly devoid of detail and therefore appear cold and empty.

In general: look carefully

Our brains have excellent alarm mechanisms: when it screams “watch out” there is a reason. Then you should take good care of it. Perhaps detecting fakes is comparable to the job of customs officers at the airport. They notice something as routine as themselves. So what makes you realize that the Birkin bag isn’t real? (They’re trained for this, by the way.) Or with this tee. Ok, it’s not that hard here.
