The day after, an eyewitness told Blick, “About 15 guards were attacked. It happened right at the exit of the Muttenzer sector. The security didn’t stand a chance, there were just too many attackers.”

Police spokesman Stefan Schmitt: “According to the current state of the investigation, the attackers were in the Muttenzer corner during the game. We assume that they were FCB fans.” When the police came to the aid of the attackers, they managed to stop two people. They are two Swiss, aged 35 and 32. The public prosecutor’s office is now investigating them.

“The public prosecutor’s office will request the coercive measures court to take the two arrested into custody,” said Martin Schütz of the Basel-Stadt public prosecutor’s office. The proceedings had been opened on suspicion of, among other things, disturbance of the peace, assault and physical injury. “The goal is to identify the perpetrators,” says Schütz.
