A large-scale network outage has cut off countless people from the internet in large parts of South American crisis-ravaged Venezuela. “A new fiber optic network outage is affecting telecommunications services in the regions of Oriente and Guyana,” said a tweet from Venezuela’s state-owned telephone company “Cantv” Tuesday (local time).
The country’s largest internet provider initially did not say where the outage occurred or how long it would take for internet access to be restored.
It is the second such outage in a week, with internet largely down in eastern Venezuela. Again and again, massive blackouts occur in the country, which is considered the most oil-rich country in the world.
As severe power outages became more frequent in 2019, the government blamed acts of sabotage planned by the US and the opposition at the time. Opponents of the government, on the other hand, saw delayed investments, overdue maintenance and corruption as reasons for the collapse of the energy supply.
Venezuela is the sixth largest country in South America with almost 32 million inhabitants. Its area is 912,000 square kilometers. And it has the largest proven oil reserves in the world, as Wikipedia knows.
