Top 10 tips for e-cyclists

In the corona epidemic, many people reinvented the bike for themselves. This applies not only to “normal” bikes, but also to electric bikes. More e-bikes than ever before have been delivered to Swiss customers. But the more electric bikes on the streets, the higher the number of e-bike accidents (Blick reported).

Ten simple tips

We’ve put together the best tips and tricks for beginners and advanced e-cyclists to get through traffic safely:

one

Inform first, drive later

Get to know your e-bike in a safe environment before your first ride in traffic. Accelerate and brake several times in a private parking lot or indoor area before setting off. This is especially true for rental e-bikes in cities where things can get congested quickly depending on the traffic situation.

2

Practice, practice, practice

For example, cargo e-bikes are less maneuverable than regular e-bikes due to their long wheelbase. It therefore takes a lot of practice to drive it. Practice indoors, even with a loaded bike, to ensure road traffic safety.

3

Must have taco

Equip your fast 45km/h e-bike with a speedometer to make sure you’re not going too fast – in zone 30, for example. You could be fined if you go too fast, even on an e-bike! And: From April 1, 2024, even a speedometer will be mandatory for 45 km/h bikes.

4

be careful when overtaking

Be especially careful when overtaking a slower bike or e-bike. A hand signal to look behind you and signal to those behind you that you want to overtake can prevent accidents. For example, when a faster e-bike approaches from behind.

5

wear a helmet!

Always wear a helmet and other suitable protective gear.

6

see and be seen

Make sure other road users see you: Wear conspicuous clothing and reflectors. Always drive with adequate lighting at dusk, in the dark and in bad weather. From April 2022 it is mandatory that the lights be on during the day.

7

Think speed

As an e-bike rider, be aware of your high speed and consider that other road users may underestimate your speed.

8.

Braking with the brain

Higher speed means a longer braking distance: factor this into the current traffic situation.

9

set the tempo

Drive especially carefully on confusing and frequently used sections of the road: reduce speed if necessary and do not overtake.

10

No distractions

Avoid using the phone or listening to music while driving.
