After a completely free test phase, the text engine ChatGPT will get a business model with subscription. For $20 a month, paying customers should have reliable access to the software and faster results, even when the server is busy.
Another benefit of the payment version called ChatGPT Plus is early access to future new features and improvements, as developer company OpenAI announced in a blog post Thursday night.
ChatGPT is artificial intelligence based software trained on massive amounts of text and data to mimic human speech. OpenAI made ChatGPT publicly available last year, sparking both admiration for the software’s capabilities and concerns.
ChatGPT is so good at mimicking human speech that there are concerns that it could be used to cheat schoolwork or create large-scale disinformation campaigns, among other concerns. This week OpenAI therefore presented a program that should recognize texts written by computers.
The large influx of interested users in recent weeks has temporarily overloaded the system. ChatGPT Plus customers should have no problem with this. The subscription model will initially only be available in the US, but will be introduced in other countries “soon”. ChatGPT emphasized that free access to the software must remain.
The subscription revenue should fund it for as many users as possible. OpenAI also has a billion-dollar deal with Microsoft, with the group integrating the company’s programs into its cloud platform. ChatGPT will also be integrated into Microsoft’s Bing search engine, Silicon Valley website “The Information” reported in January.
