Sirenest can re-traumatize Ukrainian refugees – you should know that

People who have fled to Switzerland because of the Russian offensive war should definitely be informed in advance about the nationwide test alert. That’s how you do it.

What takes place for training purposes in Switzerland is the sad reality in Ukraine: sirens wailing to warn the population of imminent danger.

If today, Wednesday, at 1:30 p.m. all over the country the alarm sirens there is an increased risk that this will cause insecurities and fears among those seeking protection from Ukraine. The Federal Bureau of Civil Protection (Babs) is therefore providing information about the siren test in Ukrainian for the first time.

In order to inform everyone involved at an early stage, it is especially important that the media and authorities announce the test widely, writes de Babs. This applies in particular to privately housed refugees.

And that’s where you come in. In addition to journalistic media, it makes sense that federal information is also shared via social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok or Twitter.

How many people are affected?

A total of 76,727 refugees from Ukraine have been registered in Switzerland since the start of the war (as of 31 January 2023). The State Secretariat for Migration SEM publishes the current figures on a daily basis on Twitter.

Want to know more about the siren test?

Parallel to the activation of the general siren alarm on February 1, 2023, via Alertswiss app an information message is activated on the smartphones.

If the general alarm goes off outside of an announced siren test, it means that there is actually a risk to the population. Then listen to the radio or get information via the Alertswiss app (or in the teletext of the SRG channels, pages 680 and 681). Then it is important to follow the instructions of the authorities and inform the neighbors.
