I often bike to the train station and then use public transport. How can I best protect my bike from theft in public parking spaces?

Bicycle theft and vandalism is a big nuisance. In Switzerland alone, around 35,000 bike thefts are reported to the police each year – but in fact, the number needs to be at least twice that. To prevent theft, Pro Velo recommends storing the bike or e-bike in a locked or monitored room whenever possible.
In around 50 cities in Switzerland, bike stations protected or monitored by cameras offer protection against theft and vandalism. Outside of protected areas, the bike should not only be locked, but also locked to a bracket or pole. More expensive padlocks tend to offer more security than cheap cable locks.
Location via smartphone
Owners should note the bike’s case number, brand and color so that the bike can be found and assigned more easily in the event of theft. Some newer models, especially more expensive e-bikes, also have a GPS tracker hidden in the bezel, which in case of theft allows the bike to be located via a smartphone app. Retrofit systems that can be integrated into an already purchased bike are also commercially available.
If, despite all precautions, a theft does occur, it is recommended that you report it to the police and your personal theft insurance. Bicycles can also be registered in private registers, sometimes for a fee. There are more tips on bike theft at pro-velo.ch or in this Blick guide.
