Brussels is asking for information on the risks of artificial intelligence

The European Commission (EC) has requested information from six internet platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, and two internet search engines (Bing and Google Search) on the risks of artificial intelligence (AI), the institution reported on Thursday. statement.

Other platforms to which Brussels has sent requests for information under the Digital Services Act include Snapchat, YouTube and X.

The commission specifically asked them “to provide more information on their measures to mitigate the risks associated with generative artificial intelligence, such as so-called “hallucinations”, in which artificial intelligence provides false information about the viral spread of deepfakes, as well as automated manipulation of services, which can mislead voters.

In the Appendix, requested “information and internal documents on risk assessments” and measures to mitigate the impact of generative artificial intelligence both on electoral processes and on the spread of illegal content, protection of fundamental rights and minors, gender violence and psychological well-being.

Other areas where Brussels wants to collect data on the impact of evaluations are personal data protection, consumer protection and intellectual property.

The Commission’s issues revolve around the creation and dissemination of AI-generated content.

lInterested companies must submit the requested data to the Commission by April 5 for issues related to election protection, and by April 26 for others.

The request for information is an investigative action that is without prejudice to possible additional steps that the Commission may decide to take.

Based on the response, the Commission will assess further steps.

The Digital Services Regulations provide that Brussels can impose fines for inaccurate, incomplete or misleading information in response to an information request.

Brussels has warned that if the platforms and search engines do not respond to the request, it could subpoena them to provide information, and failure to respond within the deadline could lead to the imposition of fines.
