Options for transporting kids by bike really depend on whether they are non-motorized cargo bikes or electric-assist e-cargo bikes; the latter must choose between “slow” speeds of up to 25 km/h and high speeds of up to 45 km/h. h Supported e-cargo bikes can be distinguished. Up to four children can be transported with non-motorized bikes and slow e-cargo bikes: Up to two children are accommodated in the box of the cargo bike, plus one in a protected child seat and the other in an attached trailer, the so-called shadow bike.

The situation is different with e-cargo bikes, which are supported at speeds up to 25 km/h: They can have a maximum weight of 200 kilos, including people and all kinds of goods. The maximum total weight of the child trailer is 80 kilos.

A weight limit of 200 kilos also applies to fast e-cargo bikes, which can reach a maximum speed of 45 km/h with pedal support. In this category, only one child can be carried on a bicycle in a protected seat. This can be found on the front of a box or on the rear of the bike. It is also possible to take two children with you in a children’s caravan or one child in a shadow bike. Up to three children can be transported on fast electric cargo bikes.
