More than half of the data stolen from the federal government was sensitive

During the cyber attack on the company Xplain in May 2023, more than 9,000 data objects from the federal government were stolen and published on the darknet. According to the Federal Cybersecurity Office (BACS), more than half contained sensitive information.

This included personal data, technical information, secret information and passwords, as the BACS announced on Thursday. Four objects contain readable passwords.

According to the BACS, 95 percent of the stolen federal data came from the administrative units of the Federal Ministry of Justice and Police (FDJPD). The Federal Ministry of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDBS) accounted for a further three percentage points. The other departments were “only marginally affected in terms of quantity,” said Thursday.

The report did not investigate why the data leaked. The BACS further announced that the latter would be clarified as part of the ongoing administrative investigation ordered by the Federal Council in August. (saw/sda)
