There are strange buses all over the world: in Turkmenistan, for example, registration of non-white cars has been prohibited since 2015. And sometimes it can be more expensive abroad than in Switzerland, where bus prices are high: In the Netherlands, the price of a mobile phone worn on your ear while driving is 250 euros (about 240 francs) instead of 100 francs as here.

Here are our favorites: Five weird and expensive buses from around the world; One of them comes from our country.

Public holidays in Australia

Seat belts save lives, so failure to wear them will result in a 60 franc fine (there are a few exceptions to the belt requirement here). Australia is much harsher and weirder: missing the life-saving click costs 260 francs on weekdays. However, on public holidays, authorities impose double fines.

One hand in Cyprus

You shouldn’t look too relaxed in a rental car while on holiday in Cyprus: you should keep both hands on the steering wheel at all times, except for tasks such as changing gear. If you drive one-handed, you pay, but by our standards 85 Euros (about 80 Fr.) is a relatively small amount.

3

swearing in America

The USA has a lot of weird territorial rules. You are not allowed to shoot games from cars in the state of Tennessee. But whales. It’s not just that Tennessee is by the sea. Our hit: In Rockville, Maryland, anyone who swears inside a car loud enough to be heard outside will face a $100 fine (about 91 Fr.) and up to 90 days in jail!

2

blue in switzerland

When it comes to absurdly brutal penalties, Switzerland are still hard to beat and come in second. How much could it cost to be a foot above the line in the blue zone with two tires for three days in Zurich with a resident’s ID card? 1250 francs (700 franc fine, 550 franc fee)!

Wet in Great Britain

Our front runner: If you’re traveling to Great Britain, you don’t just need to be careful about driving on the left: if you don’t make a very British-minded circle around passers-by when it’s wet on the constantly raining island and thus get them wet, you’ll be charged £5,000 (almost Fr5,600). You may be fined up to )
