There is no other place they would rather display it. The automotive industry has long chosen CES, the Consumer Electronics Show, as its favorite event, with the field of mobility expanding each year. With artificial intelligence, new technologies and tools, they almost surpass technology giants from Apple to Google at their own fairs. For some companies, innovation seems to know no boundaries. Hyundai and Xpeng are even unveiling near-production flying cars in the Nevada desert.
German brands also took part in CES, which ended yesterday. With the fully electric and intelligently networked Concept CLA, Mercedes not only offers a near-production preview of its new entry-level model to be launched at the end of the year, but also introduces the new MB.OS operating concept. a cockpit-wide display and virtual assistant MBUX. In addition to being intuitively controlled by touch and voice, it also uses artificial intelligence in addition to the most modern computing power on board.
VW Group brands are also bringing artificial intelligence (AI) to cars. Models with IDA voice control will be able to access ChatGPT’s almost unlimited functions via voice command starting in the second quarter of 2024. If you want, you can have researched content read to you while you drive and operate vehicle functions in normal everyday language – the AI understands this. This is made possible thanks to technology partner Cerence Inc.’s Cerence ChatPro program, which is implemented in electric ID models and Golf, Passat and Tiguan vehicles. “We are the first series manufacturer to bring this innovative technology to vehicles from the compact segment onwards,” said VW Chief Development Officer Kai Grünitz, 46, in Las Vegas.
BMW is holding back a bit this year after its big New Class show at CES last year, but like Mercedes, it’s introducing a new operating concept. The BMW Digital Premium service gives BMW drivers access to a wider range of their online platforms. In addition to optional functions for the vehicle, this also offers a growing list of third-party applications for music, news and games for the infotainment system. The personal voice assistant in the vehicle can be used in a much more diverse way, thanks to artificial intelligence, and can answer any question within seconds, no matter how unusual.
But other than that, Europe, North America and China are only sparsely represented at the Las Vegas Convention Center in the massive West Hall, which focuses on mobility. Also missing are the Stellantis Group, the Toyota, Ford and Renault-Nissan brands, General Motors and its subsidiaries, electric pioneer Tesla and other impressive Chinese brands.
But the biggest automotive appearance at CES 2024 will be celebrated by Korea’s major conglomerate Hyundai, which is not only introducing new technologies through its brands, but also allowing new electric vehicles to shine for the first time outside of South Korea. Hyundai is brimming with confidence and is increasingly placing emphasis on fuel cells as well as battery electricity.
Hyundai subsidiary Kia is showing not only its EV3 and EV4 electric models in Las Vegas, but also five PBV studies (purpose-built vehicles) for everyday commercial use. The flexible electric platform enables commercial vehicles with different bodies. “With the PBV business, we go beyond the traditional automotive concept and can address very specific needs through optimized vehicles and services,” explains Kia President and CEO Ho Sung Song (54). In 2025, Kia PV5 will be the start of the new model series. The versatile electric vehicle is optimized for paging, delivery and supply services and can be flexibly adapted to different customer requirements.
Honda is also making a surprisingly strong appearance in Las Vegas, unveiling two new electric vehicles with the “0 Series” scheduled to be available in international markets from 2026. “The mobility we dream of is not a continuation of the trend of thick, heavy but smart electric vehicles,” says Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe (62). Limousine Saloon and Space Hub have an extremely simple style and provide a sensational look with their reduced shapes. Both electric models have a new brand logo reminiscent of an egg. And: This electric car shouldn’t stay with its two-pack. Starting in 2026, Honda wants to introduce an entirely new electric family with the latest battery and charging technology that charges battery packs from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 15 minutes.
Will all the innovations at CES also translate into real products? Some tech attendees at CES are gambling on the future by presenting new technologies in the dark and hoping to get positive feedback. The auto industry is completely different: It has never been closer to production in Las Vegas.
