This year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas is all about artificial intelligence. Also with the Mercedes and CLA show car.

Autonomous driving was promised by the industry years ago. Despite the big announcements, we’ve noticed almost nothing about it to date. Of course, driver assistance systems have learned new things. However, taking your hands off the steering wheel to sleep or do other activities on long journeys remains a pipe dream.

However, the subject of artificial intelligence (AI, artificial intelligence in English) is approached in a different way. The issue has been present in the technology world for years. Artificial intelligence has made a breakthrough with ChatGPT and is currently conquering the automotive industry. There is almost no automaker at this year’s CES in Las Vegas (USA) that does not present anything on this topic; mostly with a highly advanced voice control system. This shows that buttons and control knobs in the car’s cockpit will soon become a thing of the past.

New operating systems from Mercedes and BMW

With the fully electric and intelligently connected Concept CLA, Mercedes not only offers a near-production preview of the entry-level model that will be launched at the end of the year, but also introduces the new MB.OS operating concept. cockpit-wide display and virtual assistant MBUX. Not only can it be intuitively controlled by touch and voice, but it also uses artificial intelligence in addition to the most modern computing power on board. “Our digital advances, which we will demonstrate at CES 2024, are the cornerstones of our path to a highly personalized Mercedes-Benz customer experience,” enthuses Mercedes Chief Development Officer Markus Schäfer (58). The new CLA series also offers 800-volt architecture, charging speeds of up to 300 kW and a maximum range of 750 kilometers. Besides the four-door coupe, there will also be a Shooting Brake station wagon and two SUVs.

Like Mercedes, rival BMW is also introducing a new operating system at CES. The “BMW Digital Premium” service gives BMW drivers access to an expanded offer from its online platform. In addition to optional functions for the vehicle, this also offers a growing list of third-party applications for music, news and games for the infotainment system. The personal voice assistant in the vehicle can be used in a much more diverse way, thanks to artificial intelligence, and can answer any question within seconds, no matter how unusual.

VW brings ChatGPT to cars

VW Group brands are also bringing artificial intelligence to automobiles. Starting in the second quarter of 2024, models with IDA voice control will be able to access ChatGPT’s almost unlimited functions via voice command, research content read to them while driving, and operate numerous vehicle functions in natural language. This is made possible by the “Cerence ChatPro” program that technology partner Cerence Inc. implements in its Golf, Passat and Tiguan vehicles, as well as in its electric ID models.

“VW has always democratized technology and made it accessible to many people,” says VW Chief Development Officer Kai Grünitz (46). “We are the first mass manufacturer to bring this innovative technology to vehicles starting from the compact segment. “Thanks to the seamless integration of ChatGPT, we offer drivers added value and direct access to the AI-based research tool.”

Hyundai thinks beyond the vehicle

Korean automobile giant Hyundai is going one step further. With the “Software Defined Everything” strategy, all vehicles, fleets and ecosystems will become valuable modules of daily life with artificial intelligence integration. Koreans in particular want to develop a mobility ecosystem that can meet users’ needs anytime, anywhere. According to those responsible at Hyundai, our vehicles will turn into constantly learning artificial intelligence machines in the next few years. This creates new opportunities for automation, communicating data, preventing potential pain points, personalizing the user experience and optimizing services and solutions to deliver value to users. “Our vision as a mobility solutions provider goes beyond the vehicle issue,” explains Chang Song (55), President of Hyundai Motor Group, “because we see mobility as a new source of knowledge and innovation.”
