“Deal is taking shape”: American club wants to join the rankings

Los Angeles FC maintains partnerships with giants FC Bayern Munich – and is now on the verge of joining Grasshopper Club Zurich. This is evident from research by the German ‘Kicker’.

Accordingly, the deal is already taking “concrete form” and should be completed “immediately.” In the fall, the business portal Bloomberg reported that the MLS club had made an offer to the Chinese club management (“Champion Group”).

Buying GC is not a problem yet

The partnership with Bavaria refers to the joint venture ‘Red and Gold’, in which the Munich company acts as an investor. However, a complete takeover of the Zurich club is not yet an option for the reigning runner-up in the American competition.

The obvious reason: UEFA prohibits a club participating in UEFA club competitions from “directly or indirectly holding securities or shares of another participating club”. However, if the Hoppers were to ever play on the international stage again, this arrangement would not apply to the Munich side. Because neither they nor the joint association ‘Red and Gold’ would hold shares in GC, just LAFC alone.

In April 2023, the team, with which Swiss goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic was under contract until the end of last year, took over the Austrian fourth division club Wacker Innsbruck. “Red and Gold” also works with the Gambinos Stars Africa club in Gambia and owns the majority of shares in the Uruguayan capital club Racing de Montevideo.
