A look at new car sales statistics in Switzerland in 2023 shows that not only high-horsepower sports cars and above-average luxury cars rarely leave local showrooms, but also completely normal everyday cars. We’ve put together the rarest PWs sold in Switzerland in 2023, from ten models sold to just one.
One of the most exclusive vehicles on this list is the Ferrari Daytona SP3. The sports car, produced in a limited edition of 599 units, was unveiled at the end of 2021 and sold out in a very short time; Last year, 10 units reached Switzerland. But even the much less rare Jaguar XF could only entice ten buyers. After all, it is not surprising that limousines always have a hard time in Switzerland. The XF also had its last facelift in 2017.
In this overview of the Swiss and Liechtenstein car market, sports cars take 9th place. We start with the Maserati Quattroporte and Lexus LC, which are the cheaper of the nine models sold. While the Italian is a limousine that is slowly showing its age, the Japanese have never been very popular in this country as a 2+2 car. The Ford GT is more expensive and is limited to approximately 1,350 units. American has been on the market since 2016 and was produced until last year. A few more copies will probably be sold next year. The Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar has also rolled off the production line in Switzerland nine times. And that’s certainly a high number: There are only 260 examples worldwide; 150 of these are “regular”, 85 Spider and 25 AMR Pro are for the racetrack only.
Aston Martin has sold just one less unit of the neat DB11 Valkyrie hypercar in 2023. Joining the British Gran Turismo are other sports cars such as the Bugatti Chiron, McLaren 720 S and Morgan Plus 6. The first two are discontinued models, while the Morgan is a niche product. All eight Suzuki Jimnys found a buyer due to the transition from passenger cars to commercial vehicles (also interesting: the cheapest all-wheel drive vehicles in Switzerland). Volkswagen ID.6 is also in this area. ID.6? Yes there is. However, since this VW was actually intended only for the Chinese market, eight units were specially imported.
True to its name, the Caterham Seven ranks seventh. The two-seat roadster is a niche vehicle and is designed for pure driving pleasure. Dodge also sold seven of its Charger muscle car.
BMW Alpina cars are mostly driven by enthusiasts who want to be much more exclusive than a BMW. The Bavarian niche manufacturer managed to sell six each of its B4, D3 and XB7 models to Switzerland. From diesel to electric: The all-new, all-electric Rolls-Royce Specter has already been sold six times. There is another discontinued model in sixth place: Mitsubishi Outlander. It already has a successor in other markets and is planned to arrive in Europe this year.
Other special Ferrari models include the Monza SP1 and SP2. Last year, five of each were sold. They are considered the beginning of Ferrari’s limited Icona series and were introduced in 2018. McLaren sold the same number of each of its GT and 765 LT sports cars. All five Toyota Siennas found their owners. These are likely import vehicles, as Toyota only produced the last generation of the family minivan until 2020. Ford was also able to sell five Broncos, but those were also probably imported: the new Bronco isn’t available at dealerships yet.
Another model whose production has been discontinued is the Hyundai Ioniq. Sedan production from South Korea stopped in 2022. Like the Ioniq, the BMW 6 Series is a discontinued model. BMW produced the 6 Series until last year, when the Munich automaker replaced that model in its model range with the BMW 8 Series. Two completely new models arrived last year: Lexus’ luxury minivan called LM and the all-electric mini SUV Volvo EX30.
The Dodge Hornet has been sold in North America since last year; All three imported examples reached Europe in 2023. Lamborghini’s Aventador super sports car was also registered only three times, and its successor Revuelto was already in the starting blocks. Other models with three registrations are the Ferrari 488, which has not been produced since 2019, and the four-door Smart Forfour. But new to the portfolio is the DB12, the successor to the aforementioned Aston Martin DB11.
We start in second place with three Chinese vehicles (also interesting: China’s electric cars are heading to Switzerland). The new models Aiways U6, JAC e-JS1 and Maxus Mifa 9 seem to have received little response from Swiss motorists to date or they are not very well known. McLaren also recorded two sales each for the 570 S, 750 S and Elva models. Opel Insignia also found two new owners, but the model has been discontinued since mid-2022. On the other hand, Hyundai Nexo is officially still on offer, but the fuel cell car’s high prices and still weak infrastructure seem to deter many interested parties.
At the top of the rarity podium are exotics such as the Alfa Romeo 4C, Bugatti Centodieci, Chevrolet Camaro, Lamborghini Countach, Lexus RC, Lotus Exige, McLaren 600 LT and Nissan GT-R. But less exotic cars like the all-electric BMW i3, Chevrolet Trailblazer mini SUV, Lexus LS sedan and Renault Kadjar, which replaced the Renault Austral, have also found a new owner.
