Car won’t start in winter? It’s probably due to the battery.

front window

In slush or on salty and busy roads, the windshield of many cars quickly becomes dirty. As a result, the window was not damaged, says TCS mobility consultancy expert Erich Schwizer. For safety reasons, the glass still needs to be cleaned regularly. “That’s why drivers need a lot of windshield wiper fluid in the winter,” says Schwizer. From a financial perspective, it’s always worth keeping a spare bag in your car in the winter. “If you buy one or two in stock at the hardware store, they will be much cheaper than if you buy them at the gas station.”

battery

According to Schwizer, chemical processes in batteries occur more slowly at low temperatures. “This weakens the car battery.” Additionally, since the engine oil is cold in winter, more electricity is required to start the engine. “If the car won’t start in the winter, it’s almost always because of the battery.” In these cases, Schwizer recommends calling the breakdown service and then having the battery checked.

engine

Diesel engines sometimes have difficulty starting in temperatures below minus 20 degrees: “The problem is not the engine, but the diesel fuel,” says Schwizer. Since the paraffin contained in diesel forms crystals, fuel filters and pipes can become clogged. To avoid this problem, gas stations in colder regions offer special Alpine diesel, which can only freeze at minus 25 to minus 30 degrees in winter. To be on the safe side, Schwizer recommends: “If you’re going on a ski holiday by car, it’s best to refuel in the mountains first.” There – unlike on the plains – special Alpine diesel is definitely available. Schwizer says that in general, as long as the vehicle is serviced according to the agreed times, the engine as well as the brakes should not be damaged by the winter cold. “Neither gasoline nor diesel engines freeze in winter.”

tires

“The cold doesn’t affect the tires,” says Schwizer. Winter and summer tires are not damaged by frost or snow. According to Schwizer, the only thing that matters in winter is that winter tires (summer tires should not be used) are always sufficiently inflated to ensure the highest possible grip on the ground. Schwizer says this is important even if the streets are snowy or icy.

to paint

Essentially, the paint coat and underbody of modern cars are very durable, Schwizer says. However, damaged areas or areas where two metal sheets meet are susceptible to corrosion due to salt and dirt from the roads. That’s why Schwizer recommends: “In winter, a car should be cleaned roughly once a week if it is used regularly.”
