Here, on Steinentorstrasse, two sisters were first brutally attacked by a Libyan refugee, then knocked down and robbed. The area is part of Basel’s nightlife district and there are many passers-by at night.

The real horror came only after the Halloween party at the Basel restaurant “L’Osteria” on Steinentorstrasse. Sandra* (19) and Nicole O.* (22) were returning home from a costume party. A few meters later, the duo was attacked by a Libyan refugee (31). Sandra is dressed as a policewoman and her sister is dressed as a cat. The attack took place a month ago. The two are still confused and afraid. You don’t want to be recognized in the Blick article either. Because the person who tortured him is free.

They are afraid that the perpetrator will find them and take revenge for the complaint they made against him. His eye, which was bruised as a result of the punch his sister received, can no longer be seen. But the psychological wounds remained. The images from Halloween night disturb him.

It was Sunday night, October 29th. After leaving the restaurant after the party, the younger sister walked a few steps ahead. “That’s probably why the guy thought I was traveling alone,” says Sandra O. “He actually came up to me and made a greeting line. He asked why I was going home. I told him to leave me alone, and he said some disgusting things.” It got really unpleasant after that. Sandra O. recalls: The man pushed me against the wall, I couldn’t go any further. When I tried to push him away, he attacked me.” The man hits his victim’s ear with the palm of his hand. His eyes black out and he doesn’t remember anything after that.

Then her sister intervened

Then his sister intervenes. He tries to intervene and throw her off. But: “He said we could have a threesome. When I yelled at him, I saw in his eyes that he was really angry. He swore in Arabic.” He spits on the woman’s face, then hits her with all his might. “He hit my right eye with his fist. I fell to the ground,” says Nicole O.

The two women do not realize that he is stealing from them. “It wasn’t until I got home that I realized my Cartier finger rings were missing,” she says. Sandra still remembers the man then calmly walked away.

Nobody cared about the victims

Sandra and Nicole O. cannot understand that no one is helping them. “There were a lot of people outside. But no one cared about us or confronted the attacker,” says Nicole. The attack took place on Steinentorstrasse, a street frequented by partygoers. After all: After calling the police, everything happens very quickly. The man was caught and arrested within minutes. However, the asylum seeker with a Libyan passport also attacks, insults and spits at police officers. However, women only learn this from the criminal decision.

Like the arrest, the legal process of the attack continues at record speed. The incident took place on Sunday night and the criminal decision against 31-year-old Khaled M.* was issued on Monday. He was given a suspended sentence of 60 days and a suspended fine of 600 francs for insults and assault, as well as violence and threats against officials. Penalties will only be carried out if he breaks the law again. He was immediately released again.

Two victims are in worse condition. Her older sister, who is studying alongside her job, is still on sick leave due to the attack. The little one is also having difficulty coping with his education. Sandra had a brain injury and had been suffering from tinnitus since the blow. Nicole suffered a concussion. Both suffer from anxiety. They don’t even feel safe at home.

Penalty decision is indisputable

They accuse authorities of not giving them enough information about their options as victims and the sentencing decision just a few weeks later received sent. “We do not accept the light sentence,” Nicole O. tells Blick. However, as the prosecutor’s office wrote upon request, the victims do not have the right to object to the criminal decision. It will therefore only be delivered once it has become legally binding.

It all happened so quickly for the two women. Looking back now, they know that the decision had already been made when they went to the family doctor on Monday and their injuries were documented. “This was not just an act of violence,” the duo said. And so on: “That’s why we have doctor certificates.”

The two women now have no choice but to contact the Victim Support Center in Basel. Here they are seeking help for the trauma they experienced. “We also check whether we can file a civil lawsuit against the perpetrator,” says Sandra O.
