The EU wants cyber attacks by Russia and Co. better defense

The European Union is arming itself against Putin’s elite hackers and internet troll armies.

To defend itself against threats from the cyber and information space, Brussels has done this a coordination center initiated by Germany the work began.

In the Cyber Information Domain Coordination Center (CIDCC) will converge security-relevant information from EU countries to protect joint operations and improve military planning and command processes.

In the future, it would be possible to respond even faster and more effectively when campaigns against EU operations are launched using false information on the Internet. Other relevant information may include information about the activities of hacker groups.

Supporting Russian cyber attacks over Ukraine

“We have constant attacks on our networks in cyberspace,” said Vice Admiral Dr. Dr., who is responsible for setting up the CIDCC. Thomas Daum. The background, for example, is that states such as Russia have an interest in discrediting the governments of Germany and other EU countries because of their support for Ukraine and disrupting the population.

The CIDCC should now regularly prepare a comprehensive situational report on relevant events and developments in the cyber and information space for the EU and share it among nations.

“The Russian attack on Ukraine and the importance of cyberspace in this war underline how important it is that Europe can also operate on the digital battlefield.”

Only five soldiers

According to the chairman of the EU Military Committee, the new CIDCC could also play an important role in securing information exchange between the armed forces of EU states in the future. Cyberspace plays a major role in the military field, said Austrian General Robert Brieger.

There are currently five soldiers working in the new CIDCC, but that number will soon increase to seventeen, the Bundeswehr announced on Thursday. The development of the center was coordinated through the Pesco collaboration platform. It was launched in December 2017 to make the EU more flexible and independent in defense matters. With the exception of Malta, all EU countries are involved in ongoing military cooperation.
