Now the wolf packs in Switzerland must be targeted: the cantons want to shoot twelve entire packs during the wolf hunt that starts on December 1. While more than half of the packs in the canton of Valais will be wiped out, in Gruabünden the figure is a third.
The requests for regulation from the cantons are still being examined, as the Federal Office for the Environment (Bafu) announced at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. The agency plans to provide information next week. According to the amended hunting regulations, wolves may be shot preventively from December 1 to January 31, i.e. before they have caused damage. Not least, the hope is that the wolves will become more timid.
According to the federal government, there are currently 32 wolf packs with a total of around 300 wolves roaming Switzerland. In 2020 there were still eleven packs with more than 100 wolves.
The number of animals they killed rose from 446 in 2019 to 1,480 last year. This is especially a problem for the alpine economy. (SDA)
