On average, young people replace their mobile phones every three years; adults replace them much faster

Young people in Switzerland are replacing their smartphones after almost three years. According to a new report, they are using their mobile phones almost a year longer than in the last survey from 2016.

While in 2016 a device was replaced on average after 1.9 years, in 2022 it was in use for about 2.7 years, according to the JAMESfocus report published on Wednesday by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and Swisscom. More than 1,000 young people between the ages of 12 and 19 were interviewed for the report.

The ZHAW said teenagers would use their smartphones longer than adults. Among the adult population, the average duration is about two years.

Moreover, according to the report, the share of used devices (21 percent) is higher among young people than among adults (seven percent). 42 percent of young people have also had their mobile phone repaired. This was also only seven percent among adults.
