Driving with a winter coat is extremely dangerous, especially for children!

Even though it’s not very cold anymore, sometimes you’re behind the wheel in a winter coat. This winter clothing proves to be extremely dangerous when driving.

The ADAC, the German counterpart to the ANWB, comes to this conclusion based on a crash test. In this article we list everything you shouldn’t do.

Wearing a winter coat while driving is extremely dangerous

Getting behind the wheel with a thick winter coat or down jacket doesn’t just limit your ability to move. But your jacket also has a big influence on the effectiveness of the seat belt in the car, especially for children.

The crash test was carried out at a low speed of just 16 kilometers per hour. But even then, serious injuries to the intestines, liver or spleen can occur. In fact, emergency braking while wearing a winter coat can result in minor injuries.

How can you get injured in a winter coat? Isn’t it an extra layer between the belt and your body? That’s true, but it’s this extra layer that’s the problem. The padding creates space between your body and the belt. The lower part of your belt extends over your lower abdomen when wearing a winter coat. As soon as you take off your winter coat, the belt presses directly on your hip bones.

Also, do not wear scarves or hats

According to the ADAC, it’s not just a winter coat that’s life-threatening while driving. Scarves and hats can also be dangerous if they obscure your vision. And thick gloves don’t make sense either, as they often provide poor grip on the handlebars. This is all common sense advice, but apparently not everyone has this naturally… That’s why the ADAC advises against driving with thick boots. This can lead to difficulty accelerating, braking and clutching.

If you are cold, you can use the auxiliary heater in many cars to preheat your car. If you don’t have a car with this function, a small blanket – over the seat belt – can also help children against the cold without it becoming dangerous, advises the ADAC.

In Spain you can even be fined for driving in a winter coat. Spanish law states that you must wear clothing that allows freedom of movement and therefore ensures your safety.
