The new 2024 highway model will be available next week, starting December 1. Many car and motorcycle drivers are now faced for the first time with the choice between the familiar sticker and the new e-vignette we introduced four months ago. The sales price (regardless of whether it is an e-vignette or an adhesive vignette) remains unchanged at 40 francs and the validity period also remains the same – from 1 December 2023 to 31 January 2025. However, the price increase is expected to be discussed again in parliament in the spring of 2024.

What is the use of e-vignette?

Unlike the known adhesive vignette, the new e-vignette is attached to the license plate, not to the vehicle. This is especially an advantage for owners of vehicles with replaceable license plates. But also for anyone who buys a new vehicle during the year. Not to mention that you can finally save yourself the trouble of scraping off the old pattern.

Important: It is recommended to purchase the e-sticker only via the Via web portal of the Federal Office for Customs and Border Protection (BAZG) at e-vignette.ch. Other providers often charge a higher price. Buying the e-sticker online is very easy: All you have to do is enter the vehicle type, country of registration and valid license plate in the form. You can also choose whether the recording will be public or not. This option is preferably preferred by people who share the vehicle (rental car, car sharing, trailer). You can check on the portal whether there is a valid e-vignette for the license plate in question. If this option is not selected, the query will not yield any results. By the way: It is not possible to replace the adhesive vignette with an e-vignette.

You can continue pasting if you want

Anyone who does not want to switch to the new e-vignette attached to the license plate can purchase the familiar adhesive vignette (green for 2024) at the usual points of sale, as before. The vignette must be attached to the inside of the windshield in a clearly visible manner. Among other things, the law prohibits affixing the label with adhesive strips or storing it in the glove compartment. The vignette should be attached to the edge of the windshield or behind the rearview mirror without obstructing the view.

Although there is no law stating that only the current vignette can be affixed to the windshield, it is recommended to remove the old vignette. For example with scraper for glass ceramic hob. Just clamp a razor blade, slide the scraper under the vignette from a corner, and remove it from the window. Moisten the residue with water and also remove it with a scraper. It’s worth the effort because police can ticket drivers if their visibility is restricted by one or more incidents.

Speaking of fines: If you are caught on the motorway without a valid traffic ticket, the fine amount remains unchanged (200 francs). E-vignette is checked based on random checks of license plates.

revenue of 420 million francs

According to BAZG, 10.5 million motorways were sold in Switzerland last year. At a price of 40 francs, it generates revenue of 420 million francs. No wonder there were repeated attempts in parliament to increase the price of the vignette. The Swiss public had already rejected an increase to 100 francs, but the issue is expected to be raised again in the Federal Council and Parliament in the spring. And assuming a price increase of 60 francs, the motorway vignette alone could generate revenues of more than a billion francs a year in the future. Until now, this revenue was directed to the maintenance of Swiss motorways.
