Many sports cars can go fast. Also achieve fast lap times on the race track. But going back? Now Rimac Nevera has also broken a new world record in this discipline. The 1914 hp (1407 kW) electric car reached an impressive top speed of 275 km/h in R position. For comparison: the latest Porsche 911 GT3 RS can reach a forward speed of “only” 296 km/h.
In May, the Rimac Nevera accelerated from zero to 400 km/h in just 29.93 seconds and then came to a standstill again. Record! However, a month later, although Koenigsegg Regera surpassed this record once again with a time of 28.81 seconds, Rimac’s super electric car is now setting new standards again with its latest record. Behind the wheel was Rimac’s test pilot Goran Drndak. “It definitely took some getting used to the journey. You look back and see the landscape pass before you faster and faster. You may also feel your neck being pulled forward, with almost the same feeling. “It’s like braking hard when driving normally,” explains the test driver after his strange record run, which has of course also officially entered the “Guinness World Records” book.
“We joked while developing the car and suspected that the Nevera could possibly be the fastest reversing car in the world,” said Matija Renić, chief engineer of the Bugatti Rimac Nevera. “Actually, the aerodynamics, cooling and stability are not designed for fast turnaround. But then we started discussing how fun it would be to try it. Our simulations showed that we should reach a speed of well over 240 km per hour. “But we have no clear idea of how stable the car will be,” Renić said. “We had no idea,” he says.
The drive took place at a facility in Papenburg, Germany, where multiple manufacturers run testing programs. “In the morning you have to tell the route manager what you have planned for the day,” says Rimac boss Mate Rimac: “Go backwards, we said.” After the test drive, the route manager asked in disbelief what this was all about. Rimac grins: “We announced: we are reversing…”
