They were already related, but now they were even developed together. In the Czech Republic: Subsidiary Skoda designed the new Superb for parent company VW, whose new Passat is identical. It was surprising, because the Passat was to the middle class what the Golf was to the compact class; Reference point. However, since electric cars and software, which are much more important for the future, are currently keeping the engineers at VW busy, Skoda was allowed to take the lead this time.

However, the biggest difference between the two disappears in Switzerland. While the Passat is only available as a station wagon called the Variant, the Superb is also available as a sedan in the rest of Europe and so may steal some customers away from VW. In Switzerland, the last Superb generation was only available as a station wagon: the sedan share of the first two Superb versions was in the single-digit percentage range. That’s why Skoda saved us the hatchback version.

More space, more comfort

But shared genes and obstetricians also mean that Skoda no longer has the space advantage over VW. The Superb is now slightly larger, but both models are now around 4.90 meters long. There is more space not only for passengers in both rows of seats, but also for luggage; because the station wagon now has 690 liters, which can be increased to a maximum of 1920 liters by folding the rear seats.

If desired, the Superb can pamper the driver and front passenger with air-conditioned massage seats on long journeys; For the first time, there are smartphone pockets behind the front seats based on the Stromer Enyaq model, and the top version features a sliding center armrest with integrated cup and tablet holders at the back. Superb has also made improvements to its driver assistance systems and a completely new operating concept with a 13-inch central display. Skoda’s largest model is also offered with a head-up display for the first time.

Up to 265 hp in the top model

The drive is provided by three gasoline engines and two diesel engines with a volume of 1.5 or 2.0 liters and a new plug-in hybrid drive with a power range of 150 hp (110 kW) to 265 hp (195 kW). Ready manual transmission – all come with a dual-clutch transmission, and the top two versions offer all-wheel drive as before.

The latter is missing from the plug-in hybrid with a system output of 204 hp (150 kW), the only truly new driver. It scores with an electric range of around 100 kilometers, thanks to a battery capacity that has almost doubled to 25.7 kilowatt hours (kWh), which is 40 kilometers more than the previous model. With a maximum charging power of 11 kilowatts (kW), two and a half hours is enough to go from zero to 100 percent capacity. You can even refuel up to 50 kW at the fast charging station.

The new Skoda Superb will hit the market in early 2024; Swiss prices have not yet been determined. The price of the current model starts from 50,260 francs. Blick suggests that the new model will probably start at 52,000 francs.
