Cyclists and hikers are interested not only in nature but also in trails. It’s a topic that generates plenty of conversation among our readers. In principle, the following applies: Hiking trails can be used by bicycles and e-bikes as long as there is no driving ban (click here for guidance). However, if cyclists are on hiking trails, they should be considerate of pedestrians and hikers and give them the right of way. And this is exactly what is often missing in practice.
Reader Adele Süss reports: “In our forest we are regularly disturbed by herds of cyclists running along the narrow forest path. This is despite the no-driving sign being so small it could easily be missed. Undoubtedly, the forest part is very beautiful and should be enjoyed by cyclists. But most cyclists travel so fast that they hardly notice the beauty of nature. My objection: Please be more considerate of the marchers!”
Reader Urs Harlacher replies: “I also ride my bike on hiking trails. But as soon as I see pedestrians, I brake and pass slowly. “I even stop completely on very narrow hiking trails until hikers pass me.” After all, these are hiking trails, not cycling trails, says Harlacher, and warns: “It’s a shame that so many egoists ride bikes and think they can do anything.”
“I have never before seen a cyclist get off his bike on a narrow walkway and swerve as pedestrians are expected to do,” says Hans Stucki from Valendas GR, annoyed. “Then we have never met before,” answers Benedikt Humbel from Baden AG. “On narrow paths I stop or give way to oncoming hikers. But in most cases the hiker pulls aside. Then I say ‘Grüezi, thank you and have a good day!’ I say.”
To contribute to a conflict-free and pleasant co-existence on hiking trails, the Pro Velo association recommends that cyclists introduce themselves by ringing the bell or calling early and adjust their speed. Humbel also had good experiences in this regard: “Ringing the bell on gravel forest roads is a good thing. After all, hikers don’t have eyes in the back. It’s important to draw attention to yourself early, slow down, and move at a reasonable pace.
Reader Bea Fischer from Schaffhausene rarely encounters such cyclists: “Many are reckless and have no respect for nature and animals. I’m also tired of constantly being sidelined or belittled. Many cyclists are aggressive and do not follow any rules!” Reader Hendric Wyss echoes the same sentiment: “Bicycles and pedestrians on the same route don’t work in practice. You can appeal to logic and calm as often as you like.”
Reader Helmut Talmann disagrees: “I don’t see any conflict between cyclists and pedestrians. I see a lot more conflicts between narrow-minded and stubborn people, whether on cyclists or on foot.” Roli Käsbohrer only agrees: “God knows there is enough conflict in this world already. Just act like civilized people and then living together will also work. ”
And reader Aldo Santelli from Liestal BL concludes: “I appreciate communities that don’t put up prohibition signs, but instead remind us of the mutual tolerance between walkers, cyclists and horseback riders.” Not only us, but also many in the Blick community agree on this: after all, it is best – and most comfortable – to drive, walk or cycle – with respect and understanding.
