BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini, AMG-Mercedes: When new drivers think about their first car, these brands usually come to mind. Many dream cars for which the necessary money is often missing. Because everyone who has just put their ticket in their pocket is still at the beginning of their professional career; such cars are rarely budget friendly.

The question remains: Which models are best suited for novice drivers? When choosing your first car, in addition to affordability, issues such as safety features, reliable and modern technology, and low fuel consumption also play an important role. We present the ten best cars for new drivers at new car prices. Of course, it is also useful to take a look at the second-hand market. The models we list are also available there.

Kia’s smallest is an especially good choice for new drivers. Because there’s one thing you don’t have to worry about: repairs after technical problems. Kia even offers a seven-year factory warranty for the Picanto. Despite its compact size, it offers space for up to five people. It impresses with its 67 hp (49 kW) one-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine, ease of use, simple operation and low water consumption (5.5 l/100 km). The price of the Picanto with the manual is only 14,150 francs.

With effortless smartphone connectivity and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the Peugeot 208 is a good option for young people. The 1.2-litre petrol engine is a three-cylinder engine that produces 75 hp (55 kW) and consumes very little fuel at 5.9 l/100 km. The basic gasoline engine, the 208, costs 20,600 francs. Since this autumn, an electric version is also available: the basic version of the Peugeot e-208 has an output of 136 hp (100 kW), but its price starts from 34,850 francs.

The base model of the Ford Fiesta also offers 75 hp (55 kW), with prices starting from 20,450 francs. Plenty of support systems, good engines and convincing chassis describe Ford’s little ones. Unfortunately, most assistants have additional fees, which puts an additional burden on young drivers’ wallets. Ford Fiesta starts with a one-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. Since last year, a mild hybrid version with 125 hp (92 kW) has also been available for 25,800 francs.

Toyota’s small car Yaris is equipped as standard with the Toyota Safety Sense safety system, which includes collision warning, emergency brake assist and lane departure warning. Yaris, whose price starts from 23,400 francs, is offered with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with 125 hp (92 kW). This consumes 5.0 l/100 km. If you like to be more economical, choose the hybrid version with 116 hp (85 kW). This reduces consumption to 3.8 l/100 km and costs from 24,300 francs.

As a combustion engine, it has been a popular starter car for many years. New drivers are also increasingly interested in electric cars; Opel Corsa-e is a viable alternative, although not entirely cheap. The price of the electric car with 136 hp (100 kW) starts from 37,760 francs. Corsa-e can travel 331 to 373 kilometers with its 50 kWh battery. If you prefer a cheaper internal combustion engine, you can choose the 75 hp (55 kW) 1.2-liter gasoline engine from 22,910 francs.

Fiat 500 is a real cult car. Even the internal combustion engine version is impressive. However, as an electric version, it seems to us to be a great option for new drivers. Because the entry-level version costs just under 30,000 francs at 29,490 francs, but still produces 95 hp (70 kW). With its small 23.8 kWh battery, the Fiat 500e travels only 180 kilometers and is therefore more suitable as a pure city car. Alternatively, it is also available with a larger 42 kWh battery, 118 hp (87 kW) of power and a range of 298 to 320 kilometers. But then the price increases to 35,690 francs.

If you travel a lot in and out of town and want to drive an electric vehicle, the tried and tested Renault Zoe is a good choice. It produces 135 hp (100 kW) and offers a generous range of 385 kilometers with a 52 kWh battery. The small car’s decent range also comes at a price: the basic version starts at 33,700 francs. However, if you want to invest more in safety, you can opt for the more expensive top version with all-round parking sensors and LED fog lights.

Hyundai i10 is a good choice for those who do not need a lot of space. The city car, with its one-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine, produces a rather small 67 hp (49 kW). On the other hand, the little Korean scores in terms of consumption with just 5.5 l/100 km. The i10 is perfect for anyone who travels light and frequently travels in urban areas. With a starting price of 13,990 francs, the budget may even be enough for higher trim lines. Not unimportant: Due to the lower price, the i10 can be insured cheaper.

Small, maneuverable and agile: the Twingo Electric is a very good choice as a starter car. The basic version offers a multimedia system with a 7-inch touch screen and automatic climate control as standard. A safety package with cruise control and lane departure warning system is available for an additional fee. The small electric motor produces 81 hp (60 kW) and the 22 kWh battery provides a maximum range of 190 to 270 kilometers. With its manageable range, the Renault Twingo Electric is more of a pure city car. The basic version starts at a reasonable 24,000 francs.

The absolute favorite of new drivers is the compact VW Polo. While it’s not exactly cheap, with a starting price of 22,700 francs, it scores points with its safe and sound driving behavior, as well as modern safety features such as emergency braking and pedestrian detection. The one-liter gasoline engine produces 95 hp (70 kW) and consumes 5.2 to 5.7 l/100 km.
