The Swiss mobile communications market is currently defined by three trends. According to a study, the more expensive providers have generally increased compared to the previous year, while the cheaper ones have become slightly cheaper. Promotional offers are also becoming increasingly out of fashion.
In an analysis of numerous subscription offers from different providers published on Wednesday, the online comparison service Moneyland.ch focused on the cheapest prepaid and subscription offers. The cost calculation was carried out based on the three profiles ‘light user’, ‘normal user’ and ‘heavy user’.
The ‘normal user profile’ is based on a person in Switzerland transferring 5 gigabytes (GB) of data per month and making 30 domestic calls for an average of three minutes.
For the ‘Low User’ profile, Moneyland assumes that a person in Switzerland makes on average only five two-minute phone calls per month and uses only 500 megabytes (MB) of mobile data.
Compared to the October 2022 survey, according to the survey, with the exception of a prepaid offer, only mobile phone subscriptions are affected by price increases. By comparison, the more expensive providers have increased their prices compared to the previous year, while there have been no price increases for the cheaper providers.
For normal users, no cheap prepaid offer costs more than last year.”
Even for frequent users, none of the cheapest prepaid offers have become more expensive compared to the previous year.
A second trend can be seen in the price reductions: the cheapest subscription or prepaid offer from some mobile phone providers in Switzerland has even become cheaper compared to the previous year. At the same time, the research shows, some relatively cheap providers have further reduced their prices.
Mobile telephony providers like to justify price increases with inflation, i.e. a general increase in the price level. But telecom expert Ralf Beyeler says:
It is striking that only the providers that were already among the more expensive last year increased their prices. No provider in the top third of the table increased their prices for the cheapest offer.
Moneyland identifies a third trend in promotions. It is said that providers are now increasingly saying goodbye to the promotions and instead relying on cheap regular prices.
The conclusion of the comparison service remains that mobile phone subscriptions from second and third brands from the three major mobile phone providers, but also from independent providers, are often significantly cheaper for customers.
