We counted once along the way: 92 no-turn signals in 74 kilometers. Too late and too short indicators are still missing. Research shows that one in every two drivers now blinks incorrectly or not at all. The demoralized morale also seems to be decreasing. This makes it difficult to interact with each other, although just blinking provides clarity. Here are the basic rules and the most common mistakes:
Anyone who crosses the center line past obstacles such as a bicycle or a parked car, or leaves their half on unlined streets, must signal left. In case of fixed obstacles, you simply indicate that you should go out, and if there are moving obstacles, you also indicate that you should turn right; It is actually necessary, but not that important. This makes signaling ahead of you even more important: it’s the only way for those behind you to know that they can’t overtake and that there’s something ahead of you. And: This is the only road that oncoming traffic knows.
When driving, turn it on early enough before changing lanes, but turn it off once you are in the lane. Before exiting, indicate the delay lane change 250 meters ahead, but then turn off the indicators. Either way, the following applies: blinking is not a space right!
Few people know this: When following a right-hand bend, you need to use your turn signal! You should also blink when leaving them; even while driving straight ahead! So if you go straight on a priority road that bends left, you signal right; but only if this will not confuse others, as there is also an option to turn right, for example.
When leaving a roundabout (here are the rules for single-lane roundabouts or multi-lane roundabouts) it flashes to the right – but not only when exiting, but from the height of the previous exit. Anyone taking the first exit must and can signal immediately before entering the intersection – but is not required to do so. Rare in this country: If you get stuck at a roundabout you don’t have to, but you can signal left first.
Lane changes should always be reported early enough, regardless of whether they are in the city, outside the city or on the highway. This also applies in cases where almost no one suspects. Example: If there is a bus lane on the right and further on it becomes our straight lane, you need to signal when passing into it. Important: Blinking announces a vacancy but does not create any rights.
Anyone who creates space for emergency vehicles (here is the entire code of conduct for emergency drivers) must signal by swerving or stopping: this is the only way for the emergency driver to know that he has been seen and cleared the road.
Hazard warning lights are there to warn: In a parked vehicle, only if it is parked illegally for a compelling (!) reason. It is used in a moving vehicle to warn of sudden obstacles (such as accidents or the end of traffic jams – not just on the highway). Deliberately parking incorrectly is not a reason: then you will receive a light fine of 40 francs when you see the back to park flashing light. When there is traffic congestion, please turn on your warning lights only when it makes sense: If you turn your warning lights on too early, you will trigger a chain reaction and often cause a greater delay in traffic flow.
It is not allowed per se (40 Fr.), but “I’m sorry!” Flashing one or two hazard warnings is generally tolerated. or “Thank you”. It’s a nice gesture that we enjoy.
Bad habits communicate by flashing their lights – not by rules, but by tolerance. Main beam: You allow the driver to get in or signal “Done, you can get in again.” Flashing right-left-right “Thank you!” the other one. One or two forbidden but friendly danger warning signals come into play among car drivers (see above). Vehicle drivers also receive signals from trucks: If the truck briefly flashes to the right, this may mean: “It’s free, you can overtake.” This is what you expect from slow cars! Signal on the left: “Please do not overtake!” Warning: Never trust, the truck may want to turn around.
Hardly ever – but someone who blinks before changing lanes is annoying, even if he wants to let others pass before the manoeuvre: it’s the first blink before actually changing. Anyone who overtakes with a permanent left turn signal does not fully understand the principle of blinking. And: Flashing to the left as a pass signal is not allowed! But if in doubt: It is better to blink very little, more than once.
By the way: All rules regarding lighting, from parking and dipped beam to high beam and daytime running lights, fog lights and flashers, can be found in the vehicle light guide.
