According to the statement made by the EU Commission on Friday, the EU Commission is taking action against this decision. The company was accused of trying to illegally drive competitors out of the market for certain processors.
Specifically, the million-dollar fine now announced relates to the part of the claims that the EU court did not collect at the time. However, since the court could not determine the part of the penalty related to the detected violations, the billion-dollar penalty was completely annulled. The EU Commission then had to set a new penalty level, which has now happened.
The dispute has been going on for a long time. In May 2009, the EU Commission imposed a fine of over one billion euros, at the time the highest in history. Competition authorities had punished Intel for allegedly abusing its dominant position in the market. According to the commission, from 2002 to 2007, among other things, the company used rebates to persuade computer manufacturers to buy the company’s chips instead of processors from rival AMD. (SDA)
