Stable rather than cheap in crash test: Chinese cars get top marks

China’s Landwind off-road vehicle performed so poorly in European crash testing in 2005 that it damaged the long-term reputation of cars from the Far East. No passenger would have survived a 64 km/h head-on collision.

Totalitarian regime, oppressive society, surveillance, blatant copying, quality problems: there are many arguments against a car of the giant Chinese empire. So far this has included serious security shortcomings. The sometimes deplorable performance of vehicles imported from China in local crash tests (some readers may recall the Land Rover replica Jiangling Landwind’s zero-star rating in 2005) has permanently tarnished the reputation of cars from the Far East. But new research by independent European security agency Euro NCAP shows how much better products from China have become, at least in terms of security.

In a current crash test, five electric cars had to compete with each other: the Genesis GV60, Kia Niro and Tesla Model Y, plus two Chinese models from the mega-company Great Wall, Ora Funky Cat and Wey Coffee 01. Surprising to outsiders, but the Chinese market No surprise to those who know it: Both models received the highest crash safety rating of five stars each!

Security concerns dismissed

The retro model with the somewhat shrill name Ora Funky Cat completely convinces in the areas of occupant protection, child safety, pedestrian protection and safety equipment. The only minor drawback is that the protection effect in the driver’s side and rear upper body area is slightly low. The part-time electric plug-in hybrid SUV Wey Coffee 01 is also on test, refuting safety concerns about “made in China” cars. The 4.87 meter long Coffee 01 demonstrates strong performance in all disciplines examined.

Johnson Qiang, Great Wall’s Vice President in Europe, said about the good performance, referring to other Chinese brands already present in Europe: “Chinese manufacturers have tried to conquer the European market before but have had mixed success in the past in terms of safety reviews. Nio “Following in the footsteps of Lynk & Co and MG, both of our models have now completed Euro NCAP crash testing.”

Kia has slight weaknesses

America’s Tesla and Kia manufacturers, as well as Hyundai’s now European-based luxury subsidiary, South Korea’s Genesis, also show no weaknesses in crash testing. At least almost. Because while Tesla received five points each for its mid-range SUVs Model Y and Genesis and its brand new crossover GV60, the newly launched Kia Niro received only four stars.

The South Korean has been criticized for the slightly increased risk of driver injury in frontal and side collisions. The protective effect in the cervical spine area for rear passengers and child safety in the head area could also be better. In addition, the Niro also showed weak points in terms of safety equipment, especially emergency brake assist and speed detection systems based on camera technology.
