EU registered trucks have stickers all over them warning cyclists not to be in blind spots. Why aren’t these stickers mandatory here as well?

Stickers on the vehicle are a tool used to warn cyclists of the dangers of the blind spot. The blind spot includes areas around trucks and buses that the driver cannot see directly or through mirrors.

There are several similar blind spots around the vehicle. It is very important that cyclists do not enter these dangerous areas. While in the EU decals indicating blind spots on trucks and buses are mandatory and, for example, in France they must be affixed to mobile homes weighing more than 3.5 tonnes (otherwise there is a risk of a fine of 130 francs), Switzerland relies on personal liability. and does not prescribe adhesives.

Never stand next to a truck

Assistance systems, which will be mandatory on new trucks from 2024, will bring more safety. These recognize people and vehicles near the truck and warn the driver. However, cyclists should not rely on such systems, they should be vigilant and avoid the blind spot at all costs.

The safest place is the back of the truck, especially when the truck is in motion. For example, if you can drive to a stationary truck in a bike lane, you should not stand next to the truck, but at least two meters in front of the driver where you are within sight of the driver.
