Mon Laferte enters a new phase with “Tenochtitlán”, a single previewing his next album, which will be presented by an exhibition to give a complete concept and which he created from calmness, reflection and love of art, he said in an interview with EFE in the main Mexican city.
“I’m very focused on my art, I want to be honest, I don’t want to be a pretentious artist. (…) I came to question everything: who I am, how I will show myself to the world, what my character as an artist has to say to the world”, explained the Chilean artist, who said that she experienced a “very comforting” process far from the neurosis that is produced quickly.
And the way he created the album, whose name and release date he still cannot reveal, is far from his previous works: he used bases and electronic sounds and he produced it together with his friends Manuel Jalil and Daniel Martínez – a famous producer and engineer – during two months imprisoned in study which Laferte has in his house.
“When they arrived, I didn’t have them a song but that was the idea. (…) It was a completely different experience for me, I came with the habit of making records, creating them from scratch. compositionfrom the guitar or the piano, and this time I went directly to the drum base, I grabbed ‘samples’, I had nothing when I started working”, he said.
eclectic business
The multidisciplinary artist explained that when her friends and colleagues arrived, she had playlist inspiration for an album that includes multiple genres.
Listed “a big music lover”, so the eclectic is on their lists but also on music, music which creates
His playlist included trip hop and that influence It can be seen in “Tenochtitlán”.
But, he said, bolero, that mambo wave caribbean music. “There’s always the little details of it,” he shared.
That mix of sounds, he assured, can be seen in his next album, in which he demonstrated taking risks and incorporating what he wanted. Something that, as he said, is more and more accepted and makes him much more satisfied.
“There used to be this thing about the Inquisition, like the Nazis, in music, that you always had to do the same thing. Good thing it’s not anymore. In my case, I would be very bored doing the same, I would feel like I’m betraying myself,” he explained.
“In the long run, it’s a failure because you stop growing, learning, challenging yourself. All the time I’m pushing myself a little to the limit and growing comfort zone“, he added.
“Tenochtitlán”, the feeling of Mon Laferte and many women
And that can be seen in “Tenochtitlan”the song in which they are heard classical stringsbut also a clear influence hip hop and even his electronically filtered voice.
The topic refers to the unpleasant situations that naturalized Mexican and many other female artists experience during their careers, such as accusations of being sexual services to get to where they are.
“I’m not trying to present myself as victim In this story I try to speak more from a anthropological appearance. There is this character that represents social judgment and, on the other hand, the inner voice that is this strength that says ‘everything will be fine, stop crying’ and I got the perfect rhyme ‘under the sky of Tenochtitlán’. And well, it’s been my home for 16 years (Tenochtitlán, now Mexico City),” he said.
The artist said it, when diskwill be ia exposure to finish it, but she couldn’t elaborate, only saying that she doesn’t feel like a singer or a songwriter, but someone who wants to express herself and has “different channels.”
