The electric car market in Germany is likely to suffer from falling subsidy premiums. Before the Munich Motor Show, however, German manufacturers are optimistic that the electric cars will eventually succeed.
According to industry experts, the market share of e-cars in new registrations in Germany is likely to fall sharply in the coming year. The reason for this is the lower subsidies from the state when purchasing. Ahead of the IAA motor show in Munich (September 4 to 10), Volkswagen and BMW are confident in the future demand for electric cars.
Volkswagen hopes the IAA will revive the recently declining demand for electric cars. “By 2027, we will launch eleven new electric models as a brand,” announced brand boss Thomas Schäfer in an interview with the German press agency. The head of the core brand wants to stick to the current electric course, despite recently cooled demand.
BMW wants to sell 15 percent of its cars with electric drive this year, and in 2026 that should be 33 percent. With the new class, BMW puts its Stromer on a platform specially developed for e-cars.
ADAC chairman Christian Reinicke does not yet see the prospects for electromobility as favourable. The German government should not reduce the promotion of electric cars, but rather expand it.
Management consultancy Deloitte expects e-car sales in Germany to fall by a third by 2024. One reason is the end of purchase premiums for commercial owners in September and the phasing out of premiums for private buyers by the end of 2025.
“Furthermore, higher discounts for internal combustion engines could jeopardize the federal government’s goals for ramping up e-mobility,” the industry experts write. Instead of the target of 15 million electric cars, only 11.7 million should be on the road by 2030.
