Many common environmental myths about e-mobility are biases. Because: E-cars are actually more environmentally friendly than cars with internal combustion engines in most cases. There is also discussion at the regulars’ desk, for example, about the range, costs or dangers of batteries. Which arguments are really true and which are chabis?
one
Tests by German ADAC have repeatedly shown that the risk of fire in e-cars is as low as in petrol or diesel engines, as they meet the same safety standards. In the event of a crash, the current flow is interrupted within milliseconds. This not only minimizes the risk of fire, but as a helper, the fear of being a victim of electric shock is unfounded. Charging is also completely harmless at all times and can be carried out without any problems even in the rain.
However, it is a fact that if the battery is deformed in an accident in such a way that its protective mechanisms are broken, a fire may still occur. In most cases, this cannot simply be extinguished – instead, the battery must be cooled from the outside and observed for at least 24 hours after extinguishing is finished to ensure that chemical reactions in the battery do not rekindle the fire.

The truth is: Electrification really started in the luxury segment with Tesla. And German automakers mostly rely on expensive SUVs for their first e-cars. But the range is growing tremendously: some models, such as the Dacia Spring, start at around 20,000 francs. Experts also assume that electric models will be cheaper than cars of the same size with internal combustion engines in just a few years. And when running, e-cars are always significantly cheaper than combustion engines due to lower energy and service costs (see TCS control).

Almost all modern e-cars can be charged with 100 kilowatts (kW) on the Autobahn fast charger – some even faster (Audi e-tron 150 kW, Porsche Taycan 270 kW). Tesla’s latest superchargers provide up to 250 kW of high-speed charging, even the pillars of the Ionity consortium (VW, Daimler, BMW, Ford) provide up to 350 kW. Such a charging power brings a range of 100 km in minutes. A full charge of up to 80 percent (100% takes a long time to save battery) in today’s e-cars takes about 30 to 40 minutes – that is, a lunch break. With ranges of 300 to 500 kilometers, cruises to the Mediterranean or Baltic Sea are no longer an adventure.
4
There are currently more than 11,500 public charging stations in Switzerland – around a third of which operate with fast charging rates above 22 kW. Infrastructure is also growing rapidly in the rest of Europe: in addition to tens of thousands of simple charging stations, there are thousands of fast charging stations and this trend is increasing. Countries like Italy and Spain still lag behind in terms of infrastructure, but the network is becoming increasingly concentrated here as well. Unfortunately, the prices of individual providers vary enormously – in Germany and abroad, you should check the tariffs before loading!

First of all, entertainment is one thing: subjective. Some just like to glide smoothly on asphalt, while others only pulsate when the car is angled in a corner. Of course, an electric car cannot boast of the sound of a V8, even if Porsche has created a sporty sound for the Taycan, an electric sports car. But there’s one thing every car fan knows: When it comes to acceleration, electric athletes like the Tesla Model S make veteran internal combustion engines look old!
