Panama opens its first technology-free zone

Panama Digital Gatewaythe first technological data center and free zone in the country, was officially opened this Wednesday with the start of work of the Italian multinational Twinkleglobal operator Group TIM.

General director of the company Panama Digital Gateway, Gustavo Lagrottasaid Wednesday that the area is a tax-favored area that aims to attract investment from international technology companies that will be able to benefit from the undersea cable highway that runs through Panama.

It’s situated in Corozalin Panama City, this building offers 5,500 square meters of space for up to 650 equivalent racks and 3.5 MW of scalable power, according to official information.

Panama Digital Gateway “It is the point of arrival of Curie, a cable system developed by Google and Sparkle that connects California to Chile, as well as new submarine cables that provide diverse access to Central America and therefore to strengthen the role of Panama as a strategic digital hub between North and South America,” the Italian multinational said in a statement.

“Infrastructure development in the Americas is a pillar of Sparkle’s plan to consolidate its position in the wholesale telecommunications market, while simultaneously strengthening its offering of digital solutions,” explained Sparkle’s CEO, Enrico Maria Bagnasco.

“Panama Digital Gateway aims to be the center of reference for the landing of new submarine cables and the center of choice for the development of an ecosystem of interconnected players,” the statement said.

The government of Panama said that this free zone has a privileged position and that “by lowering the Curie submarine cable, it will facilitate the attraction of content providers such as Netflix, Microsoft Azure, Cloudflare, Facebook, Amazon, Akamaiamong others”.

Panama Digital Gateway, considered by the Panamanian government to be “the largest data center company”, has an initial investment of 11.5 million dollars in order to maintain the country’s strategy to be “Digital center of the region”.

With the launch of the Panama Digital Gateway, there are now 13 active free zones in Panama with at least 121 registered companies, most of which are dedicated to service industries.
