From Andalusia to Catalonia, from Ibiza to Mallorca, Spain is the number one travel destination for Europeans. Many vacationers who want to explore more than hotel pools are exploring the country between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic by car or by renting. Here are the most important tips.

Although highways in Spain are gradually becoming free due to license expiration, tolls still apply on the most important express and intercity roads. Advantage: These links are often much better developed than the free public paths. There are almost always alternative routes – you just have to calculate significantly more time and distance.

Fare: CHF 10 per 100 kilometers

As a general rule, it can be said that there is currently a fare of around 10 francs for every 100 kilometers in Spain. More information and a toll calculator can be found on the Autopistas.com website. For example, if you drive from Zurich to Denia on the Costa Blanca, you’ll need to calculate a good toll of 100 francs (without Swiss vignette) for about 15 hours of driving time and 1500 km of travel.

A toll box before you travel (eg. This luxury, however, costs a good 20 francs for activation and shipping, plus a monthly fee of around 1.70 francs (this does not apply if the toll booths are not passed).

Caution: keep an eye on the vehicle

Basically, it’s not dangerous to drive to Spain. However, break-ins and thefts at gas stations and service areas are still on the agenda. Therefore, it is recommended to keep an eye on the vehicle at all times.

Children: Always in the back seat

We Swiss do not have to make major changes to the roads of Spain. Here, too, a maximum speed of 120 km/h is allowed on the motorway, and the following applies: 0.5 per thousand (0.3 for up to two years of driving experience). Minors (less than 1.35 m) must travel in a child restraint system. Important: Children should always be transported in the back seat. Unless there are rear seats, they are completely occupied by other minors, or not all child seats can be rear-mounted due to space constraints.

Take with you: two warning triangles please

For example, regulations such as what must be carried in vehicles registered in Spain (including rental cars) are intriguing: in addition to a high-visibility vest, there are also two warning triangles. Good to know: Private persons are not allowed to tow a faulty car on Spanish roads.

Fines: It’s best to pay quickly

But probably the most important thing – especially for anyone who is in a (very) rush on vacation or does not interpret the parking rules correctly: If there is a fine, it is worth arranging it as soon as possible in Spain. Because if you pay “on the scene” or within 20 days of receiving the penalty, there is a 50 percent discount on the amount! Apparently, the Spanish authorities are collecting more money than they are giving the discount.
