After Wimbledon-Aus, the audience is mercilessly disappointed: Azarenka’s confused gesture causes a stir

After her defeat in the Wimbledon round of 16, Victoria Azarenka caused a stir with this gesture.

Belarusian Victoria Azarenka (33) is eliminated after a three-set thriller against Ukrainian Elina Switolina (28) in the Wimbledon round of 16. The scenes after the end of the game now give more to talk about than the high-quality game itself.

Initially, there is no handshake between the two players at the net. Because of the Russian offensive war against Ukraine, Azarenka and Switolina agreed in advance to dispense with the usual gesture.

“I have no idea”

The crowd at Wimbledon was probably unaware of this fact, as they jeered the Belarusian mercilessly as she left the court. In response to the whistling and booing, Azarenka raised her arms and clenched both fists together. A gesture that no one could really interpret.

Azarenka herself apparently does not either. Her statement to English journalist James Gray caused even more confusion: “I don’t really know. I don’t know,” she said, when asked about the meaning of the gesture. She can’t even repeat the hand gesture.

Meanwhile, there is plenty of speculation on the internet about what the 33-year-old could really have meant. There is talk of a hand signal that stands for handcuffs. One thing is certain: the scenes after the round of 16 between Azarenka and Switolina will go down in Wimbledon history as a mystery. (byl)
