To ensure a clear view and therefore road safety while driving, it is important to regularly clean the car windows and, of course, to defrost them in winter. Numerous cleaning products and special cloths are currently available for this purpose. But getting windows to shine again doesn’t require expensive methods. A few home remedies and the right technique are all it takes.
The car is constantly exposed to air and the environment. For example, dead insects collect on windows. To remove these stubborn dirt in the long run, you must first clean the rubber strips around the windows and the contact surfaces of the wipers. This prevents the dirt from redistributed when you wipe it again. Note: Never clean the wiper blades with an aggressive cleaning agent, as this can damage the rubber rims. Instead, gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth.
Then clean the windows thoroughly in a circular motion with soapy water or vinegar and a soft sponge. This will remove gritty particles that can leave fine scratches if you keep cleaning. By the way, vinegar often works better than soap because it doesn’t smudge. Then rinse all windows with plenty of clean water and remove the windows.
Then it’s time for a thorough cleaning: Clean the glass with glass cleaner and dry it with a microfiber cloth. This can also leave unsightly lines – on the other hand, crumpled newspaper is useful for keeping glass free of streaks and lint. Newspaper is also helpful for stubborn bird droppings: Dampen the paper a little and let it soak into the soiled area. This softens bird droppings and makes it easier to remove. By the way: You have to consider different aspects of cleaning in winter than in summer.
When washing the car, the inside of the window is often forgotten. It can also be contaminated by dust, nicotine deposits from cigarettes, handprints or vapors from plastic parts. The most important thing when cleaning the interior: Cover the front panel to prevent stains and drips.
In the first step, the windows are wiped with a damp cloth to remove the coarsest dirt. Then you can use the glass cleaner again. Spray this on a cloth and clean the windows again in a circular motion. The best way to get to dirty spots in the corners is to wrap the cloth around a wooden spoon. The finishing touches, such as the exterior, are fine-tuned with newspaper. Here’s how to remove all remaining dirt and dust particles: If the glass squeaks when you wipe it, you’re done.
A clean, cleaned windshield is of little use if it fogs up in humid weather and often while driving. A special sponge helps: a regular sponge on one side and a chamois on the other. Using the sponge side, you can wipe the moisture from the misted glass and dry it without leaving a trace with the leather side. The easiest way to pack this special sponge is in the glove box.
In general, the following applies to all washes: Always wash your car thoroughly – even if you pass by the car wash. Clean your car in the shade, as damp spots can dry out and leave marks very quickly in the sun. And: Always check from every angle to find every dirty spot. This way you will have a full perspective again in any situation.
