Former Uber security chief convicted of covering up data theft

According to media reports, a court has convicted the company’s former security chief of covering up the theft of millions of user data from US taxi service provider Uber.

Joseph Sullivan was found guilty by a United States court on Wednesday (local time) of obstructing the work of the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) consumer protection agency and of failing to provide sufficient information to authorities, US media reports. Sullivan faces a year in prison.

ransomware attack

In the cyber attack in 2016, hackers obtained the personal data of 57 million Uber users and drivers.

According to the indictment, Sullivan also organized a ransom payment of approximately $100,000 to the hackers behind the attack.

Uber has already been fined $148 million in the US for data theft. France, Great Britain and the Netherlands also imposed fines on the transport service provider.
