SRF expert in a double role: Daniel Etter comments on the rides of his colleagues and rides himself

He does it again and again: Daniel Etter drives himself in a tournament where he is also a TV expert. Starting today at CSIO St. Gallen. The 2009 European team champion competes in the young horse tour with his eight-year-old stallion Picobello. In the late afternoon he sits in the commentator’s booth next to SRF equestrian expert Michèle Schönbächler.

The two horse lovers have been a commentator duo since 2015. Initially, Etter even rode the big tests at the tournaments broadcast by SRF in Zurich, Basel, St. Gallen and Geneva. “I had the organizer give me an early bib number so I could get to the microphone as quickly as possible,” says Etter. It was not uncommon for the 49-year-old to come running in his riding boots. “Nervous, it was a stress test at times.”

Picobello a Swiss Olympic hope

The former rider of the elite troops then retired from top sport. As a successful horse trader, he is very busy. “I trained less, participated in fewer tournaments and realized that I could no longer keep up with the top riders.” In addition to his work as a horse trader, the man from Bern is also a much sought-after trainer and has recently become deputy head of the Swiss elite team.

Yet Etter insists on showing his horses at tournaments. For the second time after 2022, the showjumping horse is now saddled with Picobello van’t Roosakker in St. Gallen. “I make myself happy with it.” The horse expert confirms that the eight-year-old stallion has a bright future. “Picobello could be a Swiss Olympic hope.”
